Kelly Joseph Preston passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 69.
Born on December 28, 1956, Kelly was the son of Margaret Powers Preston and Edward George Preston.
Kelly was a talented mechanic who loved working with his hands, but his talents went far beyond fixing things. He was incredibly creative and had a special ability to see possibilities in things others might have overlooked. He enjoyed using recycled and repurposed materials to create unique works of art. One of his memorable creations was an eagle lamp he fashioned from a charcoal chimney starter, old saw blades, and other found materials; a perfect example of his ingenuity and imagination.
Kelly also loved photography, fishing, and music. He spent many memorable days fishing on Lake Isabella aboard his vintage 1957 boat. And when it came to music, Kelly believed it should be enjoyed loudly. The Doobie Brothers were a favorite, often played loud enough for the neighbors to enjoy right along with him.
Kelly was also known for his strength. One favorite family story tells of him lifting up a Volkswagen Beetle; a larger-than-life memory that seems fitting for someone who left behind so many stories to remember.
Kelly shared a very long and meaningful relationship with his longtime partner, Rhonda Emmersen. He is survived by Rhonda and her family; his daughter, Shelby Graham and her family; and his brother, Ted Preston.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Powers Preston and Edward George Preston; his brothers, Mike Preston, Pat Preston, and Dick Preston; and his sister, Quinn Preston.
In keeping with Kelly's wishes, his body was generously donated to the UC San Diego School of Medicine for medical education and training. Through this final gift, Kelly will continue to contribute to the education of future medical professionals.
Kelly will be remembered for his creativity, his strength, his love of music and fishing, and his ability to make something extraordinary out of the ordinary. Most of all, he will be remembered through the stories, memories, and people whose lives he was a part of.
