Rain and cooler temperatures are expected in the Kern River Valley Wednesday and Thursday as a storm moves through the region. Snow is forecast at higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, where travel could become difficult.
The National Weather Service forecasts rain likely in the Lake Isabella area Wednesday afternoon, with an 80% chance of showers Wednesday night and Thursday. Highs are expected to reach 66 to 72 degrees Wednesday and 58 to 64 degrees Thursday.
Thunderstorms are possible across much of the region, but the weather service describes them as a slight chance. The specific lightning percentages shown in the Kern River Conservancy graphic were not confirmed in the latest forecast discussion. The forecast calls for rain and does not identify dry lightning or downburst winds as expected hazards.
The weather service forecasts 3 to 6 inches of snow above 8,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada from Tuesday through Thursday, with heavier amounts possible at higher elevations. Slick roads and reduced visibility could make travel difficult across Sierra passes.
The California Highway Patrol advises drivers to slow down on wet roads, leave more space between vehicles, and avoid sudden stops or sharp turns. Drivers should check their wipers, tires and brakes before traveling. California law requires headlights to be on when windshield wipers are in use. Those heading into snowy areas should carry properly fitted chains and check road conditions before leaving.
