The Kern River Valley is preparing for a mix of weather and river flow changes this week — a crucial update for residents, recreationists, and water-quality stakeholders alike.
Rain is expected tonight, followed by a cold start to the week. Daytime highs will hover in the low 50s, and overnight lows are forecast in the 38–40-degree range. Wednesday offers a temporary break with mostly dry skies and highs in the mid-50s, but a second system brings a chance of rain again by Thursday, with overnight lows dipping into the low 40s.
At the same time, flow data released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) show that the outflow from Lake Isabella and the downstream flow in the North Fork Kern River near Kernville are currently modest. The hourly data lists the outflow and river flow at a few hundred cubic feet per second (cfs) at the time of reporting.
Weekend weather looks more favorable. Saturday is forecast to be mostly clear, with highs around 60 degrees, offering a better opportunity for outdoor recreation or other activities.
Residents should keep an eye on updated forecasts as the next round of rain approaches later this week.
