Same old song and dance when it comes to sports info

It’s been a few weeks since I put my thoughts, also know as my opinion, down on paper. With each sports season that comes my way, I feel like cynicism has become a part of my life. I always hope that the Kern River Valley joins me in my enthusiasm in wanting to share to the valley the athletes that come across our paths. Unfortunately, sometimes those in charge do not have the same feelings. It’s hit or miss and then I as the sportswriter have to explain that it’s not my fault. The blame game is never a good look, but I’m reminded of a Family Circus cartoon that shows a lamp breaking and when the mother confronts them, they say, “It’s Not Me.” Included in the cartoon is a ghost-like figure with ‘Not Me’ written on the front of it. I can tell you It’s Not Me!!
What I find interesting is that there are those in control of the athletes and always, and I mean always, make sure the info on their players, and their team make it to me to share with the rest of sports readers in the valley. I appreciate their effort and I let them know that I do. Then on the flip side, there are those that make it seem like a bother not to give props to their players in letting the valley know, hey this team is special and the players make it so. I know I’ve said this in different ways over the two decades I have been associated with the Kern Valley Sun, but as I get older, I still find it confusing why it still happens.
I remember as a kid playing sports, I always looked at the local paper to see if my teammates and I made the paper. When it was there, my smile got bigger and it made me feel special to be part of the team. No these are not life changing moments, but they are quality moments that kids can enjoy the rest of their life. Imagine little Johnny opening the paper and seeing his name in print. I’m guessing that his posture gets a little straighter and the pride he feels makes it seem like a ‘Look at Me’ moment.
There are so many sports, not just high school or middle school, but some areas that are usually not mentioned. Those, and of course the school sports are my passion. I really enjoy letting the Kern River Valley know about hometown sports that occurs so frequently. So, I implore those that are in charge of teams and individuals that take part in a sport to make sure we here at the Kern Valley Sun, and by that, I mean me, become aware of them. It’s really simple to get the info to me. The email is [email protected] I usually send my stuff in on Sundays, but the earlier I get the info, the better. In this way I can spend the appropriate time in making sure the info gets processed in a concise, and efficient manner.
So please remember sports, and writing about KRV sports is my favorite pastime. I know I sound like a broken record that skips and skips until somebody addresses the issue. But, of course that’s a Matter of Opinion!
