The Kern River Valley Woman’s Club held its annual Christmas Spectacular, Saturday December 14. The posh affair included a dinner, which drew a pretty large crowd that night.
The event is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year. “This is our 24th annual. This is our third year here, at the Elk’s Lodge,” said Leslie Black, president of the club and chair for the committee, which plans this event each year.
“This is the clubs big fundraiser. We in turn use that money to give three high school scholarships. Members that continue their education, we’ll give them some money.”
Black said the club also helps the Kern River Valley Art Association, the Kern River Valley Historical Society, One Spade Youth Packers, Red Cross, and McDonald’s House among many others in the community that have needs.
Those attending the event buy “opportunity tickets” in attempt to win one of the decorated Christmas trees on display, which were pre-decorated. “All these trees are sponsored by local businesses and some of the club members,” Black said.
Two of the trees, which are Gift Certificate Trees, are sponsored by businesses in the whole valley. Black said, “It’s one of the biggest things in the valley. We enjoy doing it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun.”
During the event, Black would draw one ticket number, out of each of the buckets, representing the organization or person that decorated the tree. The person, whose number is in the bucket, wins that tree.
“We pick a theme early in the next year. And then we really start working on it in September through November,” Black said. This year’s theme was based on Vegas
