Kern Community Foundation
(Bakersfield, Calif., November 26, 2024) – The Kern River Valley Community Fund (KRVCF), a regional initiative of Kern Community Foundation, focuses on strengthening and improving the Kern River Valley (KRV) community. It was created by local residents to keep money in the area and to improve the community’s social, economic, and environmental well-being. A group of local community members helps guide how the funds are used to benefit the KRV community. Nonprofits serving the area were invited to apply, and three organizations were selected to receive a total of $9,500 in grants. Those receiving awards include:
Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK) – “Enhancing Food Security in Kern River Valley through Increased Storage Capacity” – $3,000: This project will fund the purchase of either a commercial freezer or refrigerator to expand storage and distribution of perishable food in Kern River Valley. This will improve food access, promote healthier eating, and reduce spoilage.
Kern River Conservancy – “Keep Kern Clean” – $3,000: This project aims to clean and restore the Kern River Corridor, addressing pollution from illegal dumping and homeless encampments through community engagement, and sustainable solutions for the homeless.
Strength of Shadow Dog Rescue, Inc. – “Fix Your Pets to Fix Your City” – $3,500: The project will fund for half a clinic for a spay and neuter program for residents of the Kern River Valley. The dogs and cats will be vaccinated at the time of surgery to help eliminate the spread of disease in the community.
