Kern Valley’s Blake Baughman gets his hand raised after winning a match in the Centennial Tournament. Submitted photo.
The Kern Valley boys wrestling team traveled to Desert for an HDL tri dual. They were able to deliver wins over both opponents.
Bishop and the host school grappled their way against each other. The Broncs were fortunate as they were given many forfeit wins to help their cause. Winners on the mat for Kern Valley were Ivan Mondragon, Michael Porter, and Max Baughman.
This past Friday the team worked their way down the canyon to Centennial High School to compete in the Kern County Invitational. While no Broncs wrestler was able to medal, this young team continues to gain valuable mat time. The top finisher for Kern Valley was Blake Baughman. He would settle in the top 12 by going 2-2 on the day.
Mondragon was in a 32-man bracket and was able to go 2-2 to finish in the top 16. Other Kern Valley wrestlers to earn wins in the tournament were Charles Schmeiser and Thomas Pacheco.
Head coach Wes Woody said, “We are really young, but these kids are starting to put it together. We have a couple more tournaments and duals to get ready for the post season, including a home dual on Jan. 22 starting at 5 p.m. with boys’ action then a girls’ dual to finish the night.”
The Broncs will be back on the mats on Saturday as they will compete in the Highland Tournament at Highland High School in Bakersfield.
