Last weekend, the 10U Kern Valley all girls all-star team “Girl Stars” went undefeated in the AYSO Section 10 tournament, defeating all foes to secure a spot in the next round of competition. The all-star squad attended the tournament hoping to punch their tickets to the all-star championships in March and that’s exactly what they did, living up to and embodying their team motto of “Work Hard, Play Hard.
As a team, their passing and ball handling skills are on another level. They showcased their skills on the field playing against three teams from Bakersfield and one from Tehachapi and there were many memorable moments that took place during this tournament.
During the final seconds of their first game, Rose Sowa stopped a penalty kick, cementing the final score of 2-1. In another game, the girls came out after being down 1-0 at halftime and Skyla Plante scored an “immediate” goal, followed by a second goal by Natalie Creighton. The Girl Stars’ defense was inpenetrable, with Kenzie Whitfield and Carly Hutchison stopping anyone who came close to the goal. Through every game in the competition, midfield was dominated by Ellowyn Speakman, making it nearly impossible for the opposing team to gain traction. Remi Preston scored a red-hot three goals throughout the tournament. Sadie Hug rounded out the team with great defensive effort and also scored one goal on offense.
The Girl Stars inspired pride in their coaches and parents. They never give up; these girls are incredibly special, and their success shows on and off the field. They advance to the next level of competition, keep up the good work Girl Stars!
Kern Valley high school girls soccer coach Paul Armes said of the team and the competition, “They are a great group of girls. They scored some goals, won some games and it was a great time all around.”
