Locals may recall that T.J. Sanders passed the organizing of his annual, “Warm a Heart” Blanket Drive onto another student, Jayda Bushling, when Sanders graduated high school and went off to university.
Bushling told the Kern Valley Sun that the public is currently invited to donate to the drive by putting new or gently used blankets or sleeping bags in the bins located at the following schools: Kernville Elementary School, South Fork Middle School, Kern Valley High School and at Wallace Elementary School. Bushling said, “I just thought it was a great project. And since T.J. was leaving, I just wanted to help in service to our valley.”
The drive, which began on December 2, ends December 20, when students begin Winter Break. After Dec 20 the schools would be on vacation. The best time to drop off blankets and sleeping bags is during school hours 8 am to 3pm, in the bins, at the front of the school offices.
Bushling said, “I just think we should help those who are in need, because it’s coming to be winter, and I think it’s just nice if you’re not using those blankets or anything; why wouldn’t you donate instead of just throwing it away? And to help those with a Christmas spirit is always nice.”
According to Bushling anyone in need is invited pick up a blanket, and other necessities, at La Bikina Mexican Restaurant in Lake Isabella, on Christmas Day.
Bushling also said she foresees continuing the event every year. “I like when we go to LaBikina, and we have all of the projects, and people helping and passing out the food there. I think its just fun to see the service that’s provided.”
