World War II veteran Fernando “Ferny” Hernandez, left, speaks with Gary Zuber, right, of Honor Flight Kern County at the 4th Annual Tribute to Veterans event on December 9 at the Reel Cinema. The annual event was hosted by the Kern River Community of Wofford Heights with the support of numerous merchants and organizations. First District Supervisor Mick Gleason (seen in background, right) distributed certificates of appreciation to veterans in attendance. Fittingly, a slogan on a superhero movie poster in the lobby (seen in background, left) stated “You can’t save the world alone,” which was echoed in a letter read to the veterans from Congressman Kevin McCarthy who wrote “The heroic deeds of the few make a better, freer world for the many.” Yes, veterans are superheroes in the Kern River Valley!
