The Reel Cinemaniac: Fast 5 News

By Josh Simpkins

Sometimes when I’m in search of a news worthy story to share with all my friends and neighbors, I find myself enamored with multiple small, surprising tidbits that just stick with me. These little tales that can be summed up in the span of a tweet can be almost as shocking as a front page story. Today, I wish to share the five stories that I can’t seem to shake out of my cerebellum. Here are my Fast 5 News Bites of the past few weeks.

5. Tom Hardy Chases Down Pair of Thieves

It would seem that you don’t want to let Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road; The Revenant) catch you stealing in his neighborhood. When a couple of wannabe thieves stole a moped near his home in the London suburb of Richmond, Tom showed off some serious action hero skills. After the two young men crashed the snatched scooter into a Mercedes at a busy intersection and fled the scene, Hardy chased one of the suspects down and made a citizen’s arrest.

4. Happy Days’ Star Erin Moran Loses Battle with Cancer

Not all news can be happy news. Happy Days star Erin Moran passed away on Saturday, April 22, after succumbing to Stage 4 throat cancer. She was 56. She passed in her sleep holding the hand of her husband Steve Fleischmann. Rest in Paradise, sweet Erin.

3. Madonna Biopic “Blonde Ambition” in the Works at Universal

Before Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears there was Madonna. Well, friends and neighbors, Universal Pictures is developing a Madonna biopic entitled “Blonde Ambition” after procuring the rights to Elyse Hollander’s screenplay about the trials and tribulations the Queen of Pop went through to release her first album.

2. Miley Cyrus has Turned Over a New Leaf

In a recent interview with Billboard, ahead of her new album release, Miley Cyrus has revealed that she’s undergone a drastic image overhaul, including her sound. Cyrus’ new sound is inspired by things far closer to her heart—such as her fiancé Liam Hemsworth, the general tumultuous state of U.S. politics, and a positively sober outlook on life, for example. She has given up drugs, drinking and even her once beloved marijuana. Good on ya Miley!

1. Pottermania is Back

Attention American Harry Potter fans! We all better start saving up our Galleons, because Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has a date set for its Broadway opening. First opening at London’s Palace Theatre in July 2016, the two-part play developed by writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and Rowling herself sent UK Harry Potter fans scrambling for tickets. Now, producers have announced that Cursed Child will make its Broadway premiere on April 22, 2018, at the Lyric Theatre. I myself will have to wait for an off-off Broadway run, but it would seem Pottermania is back.
