A man was killed early Sunday, Jan. 11, after an officer-involved shooting that began with reports of gunfire near Lake Isabella Boulevard, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies assigned to the Kern Valley Substation responded at about 1:40 a.m. to the area of Kilbreth Avenue and Lake Isabella Boulevard for reports of a male subject firing a handgun, the sheriff’s office said in a public statement.
Deputies located the suspect, who then fled toward Highway 178. The sheriff’s office said an officer-involved shooting occurred in the Highway 178 area.
Deputies rendered medical aid at the scene until medical personnel arrived, according to the sheriff’s office. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect’s identity will be released at a later date.
Homicide detectives responded to take over the investigation, the sheriff’s office said. The agency also noted that sheriff’s detectives investigate any use of deadly force by a member of the department and submit investigations to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for criminal review.
