A slide involving mud, dirt, and rock was reported early Tuesday morning along Highway 178 near the Live Oak Picnic Area, according to incident records.
The slide was reported at approximately 5:43 a.m. on Dec. 24 near mile marker 178.19, westbound on Highway 178. The location is east of Lake Isabella and west of Caliente, a stretch of canyon roadway that frequently experiences debris issues during winter storms.
Incident logs show multiple units were assigned and en route between 6:08 a.m. and 6:43 a.m. Records indicate debris was present across the roadway, though no injuries were reported in the initial dispatch information.
The scene was later cleared, and the incident was listed as cleared in dispatch records. No closures or extended traffic delays were noted in the available logs.
Highway 178 serves as a primary travel corridor through the Kern River Canyon and is known for narrow lanes, steep slopes, and limited shoulders in several areas. Slides and rockfall are more common during and after periods of rain, when saturated soil loosens along canyon walls.
Drivers traveling through the area are advised to reduce speed, remain alert for debris on the roadway, and watch for maintenance crews or changing conditions, particularly during storm systems or overnight hours.
As weather systems continue to move through the region, motorists should use caution when traveling through the canyon and allow extra time for travel.
