KERN VALLEY — Kern County Public Works crews were actively repairing a developing sinkhole Tuesday morning at the intersection of Edith Avenue and Lake Isabella Boulevard in Bodfish.
When the Kern Valley Sun arrived on scene, a county dump truck and crew were in the process of filling the hole with cold patch while traffic moved cautiously through the area. Orange cones were placed near the intersection as workers assessed the roadway and began repairs.
According to incident information, the hazard was reported around 10 a.m. as a “sink hole forming in roadway.” The issue was located in the travel area near the intersection, prompting a quick response from road crews.
The damage appeared to be caused by erosion beneath the roadway shoulder, creating a void that broke through the surface near the edge of the pavement. Cold patch — a temporary asphalt repair material commonly used for urgent road hazards — was being applied to stabilize the area and reduce immediate risk to drivers.
Drivers passing through the intersection slowed as crews worked, with traffic able to move through the area during the repair.
Temporary cold patch repairs are often used to make the roadway safe while crews evaluate whether a more permanent fix will be needed.
Motorists are advised to use caution in the area as crews continue monitoring the roadway.
