WOFFORD HEIGHTS — A prescribed burn is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, in the Tillie Creek Campground area as fire crews work to reduce overgrown brush and lower wildfire risk in the Kern River Valley.
The U.S. Forest Service, Kern County Fire Department, and Bureau of Land Management will oversee the operation, which targets about 50 acres and 500 piles of vegetation. Officials say conditions are ideal, with light winds and moderate humidity expected to help keep the burn controlled and contained.
Smoke could drift through the valley and settle in lower areas overnight. Residents may see or smell smoke for several days as piles continue to smolder. Agencies are asking the public not to call 911 to report the burn.
People sensitive to smoke are encouraged to keep windows closed and limit outdoor exposure while the burn is active. Fire crews will remain on site to monitor the area until it’s secure.
Updates will be posted by the U.S. Forest Service and Kern County Fire Department.
