Peters takes over as Kern County board chairman

Philip Peters will lead the Kern County Board of Supervisors this year after the board voted 5-0 Monday to name him chairman.

The District 1 supervisor takes over from Leticia Perez, who passed him the gavel during the board's organizational meeting.

"I know you're going to do a fantastic job," Perez told Peters as she handed off the role.

The chairmanship rotates each year among the five supervisors, moving through districts in numerical order. That puts Peters in the seat for 2026.

As chairman, Peters will run board meetings and represent the county at public events throughout the year. The role comes with no extra pay but carries more visibility and ceremonial duties than a regular supervisor position.

After the vote, Chairman Peters thanked Chairwoman Perez for her "leadership and your help and the great job you've done as chair this year.

The board meets next on Tuesday, January 6.
