According to an RPD release, on April 28 at approximately 2:20 a.m., Corporal Kyle Cushman attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver, later identified as Eric Schilling, 22, of Wofford Heights, fled, police said, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour. Schilling ran stop signs, ignored red lights, drove on the wrong side of the road, and even crashed into a block wall before tearing through gates and driving into desert terrain east of the city into San Bernardino County, police said.
During the pursuit, a female passenger pleaded to get out, but Schilling declined, police said. She sustained injuries after being tossed around inside the vehicle and was later transported to the hospital for treatment.
After about 40 minutes and 15 miles of chaos, Schilling’s truck got stuck in the desert. He attempted to flee on foot but was quickly caught, police said. Schilling was arrested and later booked into the Kern County Jail Lerdo facility.
He was booked on charges including kidnapping, hit-and-run resulting in injury, evading an officer with disregard for safety, evading an officer as a wrong-way driver, felony vandalism, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving without a license. He was listed as being held at the Lerdo facility in lieu of $191,500 bail at midday Monday.
