A Lake Isabella man has been sentenced to eight years in state prison for threatening a local family and stealing their vehicle during a home invasion in April 2024, according to court records.
On Nov. 20, 2025, a Kern County jury convicted 54-year-old Herbert Brown of first-degree residential burglary, first-degree robbery, vandalism causing more than $400 in damage, and resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer.
Jurors also found true a prior felony robbery conviction under California’s Three Strikes law, which increased the potential prison sentence.
According to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, the incident happened in the early morning hours of April 23, 2024. Prosecutors said Brown approached a woman outside her Lake Isabella home and demanded the keys to a family vehicle. When she refused, Brown allegedly threatened her with a metal bar.
The woman ran inside the home and alerted her husband. Prosecutors said Brown then smashed a glass door with a rock to force his way inside, continued threatening the family, including children, and took the vehicle before driving away.
Deputies later located Brown at his residence. Court records show he refused to exit his vehicle for nearly an hour. Deputies eventually took him into custody with assistance from a Kern County Sheriff’s Office canine unit.
At a sentencing hearing on Dec. 22, 2025, the court imposed an eight-year state prison sentence. Prosecutors said Brown could have faced up to 22 years in prison because of the prior strike.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Brown’s criminal history and actions showed a continued threat to community safety and said the Three Strikes law was appropriate given the violent nature of the crime.
