The Kern Valley JV basketball squad had a chance to be crowned league champions outright. The task was to beat Rosamond and stake their claim.
The Lady Roadrunners came to town on Friday. The prize at hand was a league championship. Kern Valley beat them earlier in the season and held the edge coming into the contest. After the battle, the championship pie would be split evenly. The Lady Broncs would lose their grasp and fall to Rosamond 33-22. With the loss these two teams are co-champs in the HDL.
Kern Valley could not generate any offense early and it helped push Rosamond into the early lead. The Lady Broncs score only five points in the opening quarter. The Lady Roadrunners put in 12 points to grab the lead 12-5. Kern Valley turned up the defense, but the offense was still struggling. The combined score in the second quarter was 10 points with the Lady Broncs having the edge 6-4. At the break, Kern Valley was looking at a 16-11 deficit.
Coming out of the locker room it was another offensive struggle for both teams. Another combined 10 points, this time it was 5-5, With the final quarter looming to decide things the scoreboard saw Rosamond still holding the five-point cushion at 21-16. The Lady Roadrunners made their claim as they were able to add 12 points to their total. Kern Valley finished the game with six points. The final score was 33-22 and the HDL title was shared.
Taylor Kristy was the leading scorer for the Lady Broncs with seven points. She was followed by Amber McAhren with six points. Sam Ruiz drained a three-pointer for her three points, while Hazel Kiosef, Mille Bustamonte, and Bobbie Pruitt chipped in with two points apiece.
Three day earlier the Lady Broncs tuned up with a non-league game against Ridgeview. It was all Kern Valley from beginning to end as they took the game 51-10. The Lady Broncs jumped from the gate and took the 20-0 lead after one quarter. By halftime it had ballooned to 35-2. After the break, the Kern Valley added 16 second half points, while Ridgeview had eight points to make the final score.
