A vegetation fire broke out Friday morning along Kern River Canyon Road, drawing a large response from Kern County Fire Department crews.
The blaze was first reported at 9:16 a.m. near the intersection of Kern River Canyon Road, according to emergency dispatch logs. By late morning, multiple firefighting units, including Crew 13, Engine 72, and Patrol 72, remained on scene. Earlier reinforcements — bulldozers, hand crews, strike teams, and water tenders — were dispatched to the incident, but many had been released by mid-morning, suggesting crews are making progress in containing the fire.
As of this update, fire officials have not provided information on the fire’s size, containment level, or cause. No evacuation orders have been issued.
Fire Activity in the Canyon
The Kern River Canyon has been the site of multiple major wildfires in recent years. In May, the Democrat Fire burned nearly 900 acres in steep terrain near Highway 178, forcing temporary road closures and drawing a multi-agency response. Last summer, the Borel Fire grew into one of the largest incidents in county history, burning more than 59,000 acres before it was contained in September 2024.
Given the canyon’s narrow roads, steep slopes, and heavy summer recreation traffic, even smaller fires can cause significant safety concerns for residents and travelers.
