Heavy rain forecast for parts of the Kern River Valley has placed the Borel Fire burn scar under an advisory, with fire officials warning of possible flooding, mud, and debris impacts during incoming storms.
The Kern County Fire Department said the burn scar is currently in Advisory status as forecasted storms could bring periods of heavy rainfall. While most runoff is expected to remain within natural channels, officials cautioned that roads, bridges, and nearby properties could experience moderate impacts if mud or debris is pushed downhill.
Burn scar areas are especially vulnerable during storms because vegetation that once slowed and absorbed rainfall has been removed. As a result, water can move quickly across steep terrain, carrying soil, rocks, and debris with little warning.
Fire officials urged residents to stay alert even if no evacuation warnings or orders are issued. Conditions within burn scars can change rapidly depending on rainfall intensity and duration.
Authorities also stressed that residents should not walk or drive through flooded areas. Floodwaters can rise quickly and may conceal roadway damage, creating dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
The following zones are currently under Advisory status: 736, 737-A, and 738.
Residents in these zones are encouraged to review evacuation routes, monitor weather conditions, and stay informed through official county emergency updates. A map showing the advisory area is available through county emergency information channels.
Fire officials said the advisory status could change as storms move through the area and urged residents to be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen.
