St. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights proudly recognized the academic success of one of its young parishioners, Kern Valley High School (KVHS) graduating senior Juan Carlos Lopez.

During Mass on Sunday, June 21, the St. Jude Parish Guild presented Juan Carlos Lopez with a scholarship of five hundred dollars. Juan Carlos completed his senior year at KVHS, graduated, and will be furthering his education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Arizona as an NAU “Lumberjack.” Juan Carlos graduated with “Honors” and is planning on majoring in Criminal Justice at NAU.

At Kern Valley High School, Juan Carlos took honors classes and was involved in several clubs and sports like football and track and also in several other activities. He was an officer of the Spanish Club and was a co-captain for the KVHS Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), an international non-profit Christian sports ministry based in Kansas City, Missouri.

One year ago, Juan Carlos was applauded for his recognition as a California State Foreign Language Student of the Year. This award was given to him by the partnership of the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) and the California Language Teachers Association (CLTA). Included in this award was a scholarship to spend four weeks in Tokyo, Japan, last summer, absorbing the culture, learning a basic language, and experiencing new friendships. His community involvement has been the Heart Walk fundraiser, rubber ducky races, and Valley Pride Day to name a few. His parish involvement has been with the young children in CCD, parish maintenance, CCD fundraisers, Christmas caroling, the food/sweater drives, as an altar server, and as an usher. St. Jude Church wishes all the best to this fine young man.

On Sunday, June 28 at St. Jude Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fraternity, saluted Juan Carlos at Mass and presented an additional scholarship of five hundred dollars. The Knights stated: “You are a model young man and someone that your family, friends, and parish are proud to know and have as an associate….

With that being said, your Knights of Columbus supporters are pleased to provide you with some additional funding toward your continuing education at Northern Arizona University. We look forward to watching you progress through this next phase of your life and are anxious to see your achievements and your development.”

In addition, St. Jude Parish wishes all of their parish students a wonderful and safe summer and continued success in their studies.
