Doubles teams sweep Rosamond for 7-2 match score
The Kern Valley tennis squad was missing a big piece when they faced off with Rosamond. They were able to overcome this issue and grab an HDL win.
Illness sidelined Kyra Flint so the Lady Broncs did some shuffling in order to try and get the win. They were able to join together as a team and step up for their teammate. The team score showed Kern Valley winning the match 7-2. The doubles teams for the Lady Broncs were able to sweep the action and give a huge boost to the match score. Kern Valley won five of the seven singles sets to give them the lopsided short-handed win.
In doubles play, the Kern Valley team of Marissa Tate and Elizabeth Davis led the way with identical 6-2 set scores to earn the team point. Abby Phillips and Karsyn Liske took the sets 6-4 and 6-2, while the team of Taylor Beam and Allison Watkins won their sets 6-4, 6-4 to complete the sweep.
Tate led the Lady Broncs in singles play by taking her sets 6-0, 6-2. Phillips followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over her opponent. Davis dropped the first set 2-6, but battled back to win the second set 6-2. This sent this matchup to the tiebreak. It was all Davis in the tiebreak as she won it 10-5. Kylie Griswold went to the tiebreak in the opening set. She would collect the set win 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak). Her Lady Roadrunners opponent conceded the second set giving Griswold the set win. Falling short in their sets were Liske who dropped both of her sets 3-6, 1-6 and Summer Santos who lost 3-6, 2-6.
Head coach Sabine Mixon said, “The tennis team played Rosamond at home. Our No. 2 player, Kyra Flint, was out due to illness, so we took a chance and moved everyone up to play higher on the tennis ladder. The girls took the challenge confidently and did an amazing job, collecting the 7-2 win.”
Two days later it was another HDL home match with Desert. Kern Valley battled hard against the tough Lady Scorpions, but in the end the team from Desert collected the 9-0 match win. They swept both singles and doubles play to saddle the loss on the Lady Broncs.
In singles play, Tate fell 5-7, 4-6, while Flint back in the saddle after missing Tuesday’s match was defeated 4-6, 3-6. Phillips lost 3-6, 2-6, while Liske fell 3-6, 0-6. Davis lost 3-6, 2-6, while Santos fell 2-6, 6-4 6-10 in the tiebreak. Doubles action saw the team of Flint and Phillips lose by identical 3-6 scores, while Tate and Davis fell 3-6, 4-6. The team of Griswold and Beam split their sets, 3-6, 6-4, but dropped the tiebreaker 6-10.
This week of action was the end of the first go around in the HDL. They started the second round on the road Tuesday versus Bishop. They will face Rosamond on Thursday.
