A 33-year-old and his 53-year-old mother just moved to East Kern County one month ago. On Wednesday, January 30, they traveled to the Piute Mountains with the intention of testing their new survival gear. However, they became stranded when their vehicle slid off the roadway in the snow. After spending the night in the vehicle, the man decided to hike until he found cell service to call for assistance.
Thursday, January 31, volunteers from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Kern Valley Search and Rescue Unit responded to attempt to locate the victims. Search teams used four wheel drives and tracked vehicles to access the area, which was covered in approximately a foot and a half of snow. Searchers found the victims and their vehicle off of Piute Mountain Rd, near Piute Peak. After unsuccessfully attempting to free the victim’s vehicle, both victims were transported by searchers off of the mountain to waiting patrol deputies who then provided transportation to town. They did not need medical attention.
