Schools celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Students got to enjoy a week’s worth of emphasis on saying “No” to drugs, all week at California Schools, Monday October 28 through Friday November 1.

Kristy Hand, a teacher of grades 1 and 2, at South Fork Elementary School, told the Kern Valley Sun that all week long was Red Ribbon Week at the South Fork Union School District, which just happened to come the same week as Halloween.

Kids were dressing in different themes each day. And the district gave the younger kids prizes to reinforce in students’ minds to stay drug free. “It goes all week long. So tomorrow will be Proud to Be Drug Free, From Head to Toe, and you wear crazy socks
and crazy hair-dos. Today everyone is just wearing sweat pants,” said Hand.

The flier advertising Halloween for Red Ribbon Week said, “Wear your Halloween costumes to scare away drugs.”

Hand said the younger students she teaches don’t hear as much about specifics regarding drugs. The practical lesson is to reinforce the idea in the students’ minds.

When the students get older, around grade 4, at the Middle School, students hear talks a bit more on the topic of saying “No” to drugs. “The Kelso Campus does Red Ribbon Week at the same time,” Hand said.

Staff members were also dressed, in the daily themes, along with students.
