Public invited to Sarge’s Boo Tacular Fun Run

The public is invited to run an obstacle course, to raise funds for Sarge’s Wreaths 4 Vets, which OnPoint Gym is sponsoring, and organized as a Kernville Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival event. The event will be held October 27 at McNally Arena. Reservations are already being taken in advance.

The annual event is an obstacle course with a Halloween theme, though the Kern Valley Sun does not recommend wearing one’s favorite costume without preparing to get mud on it. Owner of OnPoint Gym Tawnya Torgl said, “It is an obstacle course of 21-plus obstacles. Most of them are inside of the rodeo arena. There’s a few that are outside of the arena. We’re going to have two pits, which are not thick with mud, are water and a little bit of mud.”

But don’t panic yet, according to Torgl if Piute Pump Company gets involved participants would “get kind of sprayed down from the mud afterwards,” Torgl said.

Participants will enjoy climbing hay bails, up and over logs and tall walls, and pulling big heavy bags, and going over the obstacle of the big BMX mountain bike dirt track. “Really last year I thought this would be a cakewalk. But it got me good,” Torgl said, “But to see the kids with the challenge, they’re like the Ever Ready Energizer Bunny.”

Younger children will have a smaller, age appropriate obstacle course, according to Torgl, which would be inside the arena where they will choose their own pumpkin.

Spectators and families will be able to watch, from the stands, and root for family and friends for support. “This year we’re offering prize money,” Torgl said.

This year’s event will include categories of Male, Female, and Teams of Four. Torgl told the Kern Valley Sun, “For the individuals the winner of the Men’s will get $250. The winner of the Women’s gets $250.”

People signing up early to participate will get an event tee shirt.

The team of four can be anyone, parents and their children, coworkers, and even a team of athletes from the school. Torgl said, “Orion (Sanders) and I challenged each other to create a team to see who would win.” Apparently Sanders came back and he bragged he gotten guys from the high school football team. So Torgl arranged to have a team of track team members formed and her team won last year.

The event will include a concession stand with a limited menu of foods and beverages.
“Our vendors who are sponsoring different obstacles are more than welcome to have a booth there,” Torgl said. To arrange to be a sponsor please contact (951)704-9281.

The chamber decided to change the time of the event this year. “We pushed it back so that people can still drive up in the morning and still enjoy the Fall Festival in Kernville. They should have time to participate in the Fun Run which is on Sunday after church, still giving them time to attend the fair events at the park,” Torgl said.

Last year there were about 80 participants and at least 80 spectators in the stands. Organizers hope to have at least 100 participants this year.

Other than her concern for local health and fitness, Torgl has reasons for supporting Sarge’s. She said, “I love Sarge’s Wreaths 4 Vets because I’ve got family that’s been in the military. I have my dad, I have 7 family members that are buried up here, and now I know that every one gets the flag on Veterans Day and the wreath on Christmas so that my family member is not forgotten for service. So that’s super nice.”
