On August 2, 2017, human remains were located in a mountainous area above the Democrat Fire Station by firefighters. On August 3, detectives from the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to the area, and, with assistance from the Sheriff's Office Air Support Unit, were able to access the location of the remains.

Detectives determined that the remains were a person of an unknown race and gender. The remains were collected and will be examined by the Coroner's Office to attempt to determine the person's cause and manner of death. Testing will also have to be scheduled to attempt to identify the decedent.

The decedent was in an area that had been burned by fire, but it is believed the decedent's body had been in the area prior to the fire burning the area. It does not appear the fire that burned the area was set or caused related to this incident.

The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has information on this case they are asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 661-861-3110 or Secret Witness at 661-322-4040.
