Mary Jo Cormack

Mar. 4, 1929 – Feb. 3, 2019

Mary Jo Cormack began her adventure here on earth on March 4, 1929, as she was born into the family of Roland and Maude Sisler. She grew up with her brother, Bob, in a happy, loving home during the years of the Great Depression and World War II.

In 1951, after graduating from UCLA with a Bachelor’s Degree and teaching credential, she married George Cormack. She taught school as they moved around the country following George’s commitment to serve in the Navy. She always said that was what she truly wanted in life: to create a wonderful, loving, nurturing home. That she did when they settled in Orange County to raise three children.

Her children and grandchildren continue to reap the blessing of her selfless, loving care as she devoted herself to the growth and wellbeing of her family and community. Her sincere faith in the love of Jesus radiated from her actions as she walked in his footsteps, representing Him to her family, friends, and community.

For more than 40 years, Mary Jo and George played an active role in the Orange County community raising a family, working with Sunday school, Lions Club, Campfire Girls, Cub Scouts, Bible studies, prayer meetings, mission boards, the YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, sailing clubs, swimming clubs, touching many lives as they participated and served in these organizations.

They stood with their youngest daughter, Jane, as she fought her long battle with cancer. When Jane passed on, Mary Jo and George moved to a cabin in Riverkern to be close to their children, Christine and Tom, and their families.

They continued their lives of service within the Kern River Valley Community together as a team serving our community. With the passing of her soul mate in 2016, Mary Jo moved out of the now empty cabin to Roseburg, Ore., to be near her daughter, Christine. There, she found another wonderful apartment in the Garden Valley Retirement Community and continued to bring love and joy to that community even as they welcomed her with open arms.

Mary Jo finished her adventure here on earth on February 3, 2019, in that apartment, with Christine by her side holding her hand and surrounded by caregivers who loved her and cared for her like their own.

Her children, Tom Cormack and Christine Cormack, would like invite those who knew Mary Jo to attend a Celebration of Life and graveside service on Friday, April 26, 2019, at 2 p.m. on the upper road of the Kern River Valley Cemetery followed by a time of fellowship and reminiscence at the Cormack cabin in Riverkern.
