Mary Ann was born in San Diego, California to Joe and Florence Martin. She spent her youth growing up in San Diego until joining the Army during the Korean War in 1950. She received training and served as a dental assistant when she met the love of her life, John Boice, also serving in the dental field at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Mary Ann married John Boice and eventually settled in Lake Isabella, Ca where they raised a family of three children together. Mary Ann especially loved children and teaching. While working part-time and raising her family, she finished her Master’s Degree in Teaching, specializing in Early Childhood Development.
This led to a teaching position with Woodrow Wallace Elementary School where she later retired as a Kindergarten teacher having taught the children and grandchildren of her first students there. She was a Kern Valley resident for over fifty years.
Mary Ann was a devout Christian and active member in the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church until relocating to Bakersfield to live with her eldest daughter and her husband, Judith and Mark Scott. There, Mary Ann enjoyed an active life at the gym, girly visits to the spa with her daughter, visiting friends and being active in the church.
Friends in the Valley and Bakersfield alike will remember Mary Ann Boice as a “classy, sweet lady that was always ready to help.” She would greet you with a warm smile and twinkling green eyes that made all feel welcome.
Her family remembers her 1950’s mothering style that often included a word or two such as “what comes around goes around and twice as bad the second time”, or “wait until your dad gets home!” But most all, we will remember her as the loving, fabulous Christian mother who was the glue of the family and the quick, sometimes inappropriate, wit that left us all laughing until we cried.
Mary Ann is predeceased by her husband John Boice and survived by daughters Judith Scott (Boice), Linda Scott (Boice), son John Boice, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Due to Covid-19, graveside services will be family only. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
