This past week found the Kern Valley varsity volleyball team traveling to Edwards Airforce Base to face off against Desert.
The Lady Broncs started off strong, winning the first game 25-21 but stumbled in the second game for the loss 17-25. They battled back in the third game but came up short by three points, 22-25 and then took a fourth game loss 12-25.
Kern Valley, as a team, smashed down a total of 24 kills. Hitting honors went to Michaele Dietzel and Alyssa Servin with seven kills each, Bradlie Preston (5), Abby Achorn (2), Kassy Opferman (1), Bailey Hurst (1) and Alyson Bangert (1).
Opferman led the assists with 19, while Bangert, Servin and Krista Witten each added one. Opferman also scooped up 14 digs, followed closely by Achorn with 13, while teammates Servin (3), Dietzel (2), Destiny Chaparro (2), Preston (1), Bangert (1), Hurst (1), Hess (1) and Witten (1) helped out by keeping the ball alive.
As a team, the Lady Broncs had 11 Service Aces. They came from Achorn (4), Preston (2), Servin (2), and Dietzel, Witten and Opferman each contributed one.
Back at home on Thursday for Senior Night, and prior to the match loss with Frazier Mountain, the Lady Broncs honored outside hitter and lone senior Dietzel. She is a four-year player who came to Kern Valley with no prior volleyball experience. She has made amazing progress in the game of volleyball, playing ball for the Starlight Club out of Ridgecrest in the off season. With a 4.0 plus GPA, Dietzel aspires to attend Stanford University or UC Davis to become a neurosurgeon and hopes to keep playing volleyball through intramural sports.
During the 2017 season, and with two matches left to play, Dietzel has racked up a total of 64 kills, has 10 Ace serves, collected nine digs and recorded four solo blocks. Dietzel is going to be missed next year, but the Kern Valley volleyball program wishes her the best in all of her future endeavors.
