The eighth grade Lady Colts began their season with a contest versus Jacobsen. The game would go into overtime that saw Wallace come up short in the end.
The Lady Colts went on the road to face off with Jacobsen who is a Tehachapi Middle School. They battled the whole game and kept the larger Jacobsen school in their sights. Wallace had trouble at the free-throw line that prevented them from sealing the deal in regulation. As a team the Lady Colts shot just 27 percent from the charity stripe. They would attempt 18 free throws, but only five made it through the basket.
After playing four quarters the game was knotted at 17-17 as they headed to overtime. The extra period was not kind the Lady Colts as they were held to zero points in the extra frame. Jacobsen was able to add four points to their total in the two-minute overtime period. The final score saw Jacobsen win 21-17.
Katie Smoot and Baylee Henry shared the team lead in scoring with five points apiece. Teagan Liske followed with four points, while Brenna Elliott wrapped up the Lady Colts scoring with three points. Henry dished out three assists to lead the Wallace team. Smoot was credited with a pair of assists, while Bailey Walker handed out one assist.
On the boards, Liske led the team by grabbing four rebounds. Annabelle Maxwell would pull down three boards, while Smoot, Elliott, Walker, and Bridget Smith recorded two rebounds apiece. Henry swatted away three of Jacobsen’s shot attempts in the game. Walker was credited with a pair of blocks, while Smoot and Elliott each had one block in the contest. Seven of eight players from the Lady Colts were credited with at least one steal in the overtime game. The leading thief was Walker with five steals. Elliott had three, while Smoot and Henry recorded two steals apiece. Liske, Maxwell, and Kiera Kiosef each had one steal fore Wallace.
The Lady Colts head coach, Andy Elliott said, “We have a solid team that plays good defense and protects the ball, but we need more consistency scoring. We need 50 percent at the free-throw-line minimum. Overall, good start against a historically tough opponent.”
The following day, the team from Wallace bounced back to take a dominating win over Greenfield. The offense poured in 32 points. Six players got in on the scoring parade for the Lady Colts. The defense did its part as they shut down Greenfield. Wallace limited their opponent to just eight points in the game.
Leading the way in scoring for the Lady Colts was Smoot with 10 points. She was followed by Henry who dropped in eight points. Adding six points was Elliott, while Maxwell contributed four points. Addison Ross and Kiosef rounded out the scoring for Wallace with two points apiece. Handing out the only two assists in the game was Elliott.
Wallace controlled the boards as they pulled down 34 rebounds as a team. Smith was the top rebounder for the Lady Colts as she pulled down eight. Maxwell grabbed six boards, while Kiosef had five boards. Walker and Melissa Martinez were each credited with four rebounds. Elliott, Smoot, and Ross grabbed a pair of rebounds each, while Henry recorded one board.
Wallace is now 1-1 on the year and will take the court next on Thursday. They will go on the road to Bakersfield to take on Sunset.
