The Lady Broncs tennis squad opened their season by serving up a win.
Traveling to Porterville to take on Granite Hills, Kern Valley was successful in winning the match 5-4.
Trailing for most of the match, the Lady Broncs fell behind 1-3 and were at 2-4 at one point. They picked up another set win in singles to close the gap to 3-4. With just the top two doubles teams left to play on the court. The Lady Broncs (1-0) dominated in these matches for the 5-4 team victory.
Kern Valley played a Pro-set format where the first to eight, winning by two gets the team point. The Lady Grizzlies home court consists of 10 tennis courts. The weather was quite warm as the match started at 96 degrees and when it ended it was still 91 degrees according to the Lady Broncs head coach, Brian Christianson.
Granite Hills took one doubles set and three singles sets to earn their four team points.
Kern Valley won two of the three doubles sets and three of the six singles sets in the match.
In singles for the Lady Broncs, No. 1 Hannah Hurley and No. 2 Burgette Sartor dropped their sets by identical 3-8 scores.
No. 3 Tesse Monahan, and No. 4 Shelby Williams both won their sets 8-6 and No. 5 Maddy Hurley took her set 8-4. The No. 6 player, Lexie Yearwood fell in her set 3-8.
Turning to doubles, the No. 3 team of sisters, Abigaile Goulding and Adigale Goulding were defeated in their set 4-8.
Teaming up in doubles, No. 1 H. Hurley and Williams grabbed the 8-4 set win. The No. 2 team of Sartor and Monahan dominated in winning their set 8-2.
Christianson commenting on the opening season victory said, “A good start to the season. We need to keep getting better though.”
Up next for the Lady Broncs is an away date with Strathmore today. They faced off with the Lady Trojans of Foothill on Tuesday.
