The junior varsity Broncs football squad could not catch up to Mission Prep in Friday’s game.
Mission Prep started the scoring as they crossed the goal line on a two-yard run. The PAT was missed but the score in the first was 6-0.
Kern Valley responded as they took the ensuing kickoff back to the Royals 20-yard line. Setting the offense up.
James Meachem took the kickoff and rumbled his way for 60 yards to set up the Broncs at the 20-yard line.
Five plays later. Meachem completed the scoring drive from nine yards out. He took the toss and slipped into the end zone to tie the score at 6-6. The Broncs could not convert the PAT to leave it at 6-6 still in the first quarter.
The Royals came right back and added to the lead as they scored on a 56 yard run. This time they booted the extra-point to make it 13-6. It would stay that way the rest of the first half. Kern Valley had a chance to put up some more points in the second quarter, but a 35-yard field goal try was missed. The teams went to the locker room separated by seven points.
Coming out of halftime, the Royals increased the margin as they scored on a three-yard run. The PAT was missed to leave the score at 19-6.
As the teams went to the fourth quarter, Mission Prep lined up to punt. Nate Montgomery plowed through the line and blocked the Royals punt. He would complete the recovery as the four-yard line of the opponents. It took all of one play for the Broncs to close the gap.
Bryan Hernandez rushed his way for the four yards and the score. He came right back to convert the two-point conversion and the Kern Valley squad trailed 19-14 with about six minutes left.
The Royals used most of those six minutes up as they drove the ball down to the 10-yard line before giving it back to Kern Valley.
Two consecutive plays and two straight sacks by the Royals defense ended the game. The last sack of the Broncs quarter-back resulted in a safety to create the final score of 21-14.
Kern Valley totaled 110 yards of offense in the contest. They threw for 37 and rushed for 73 yards.
Josh Papp went 5-for-6 passing for 37 yards and one interception. Dean Hinkey caught two passes for 17 yards, while Meachem hauled in one pass for 15 yards. Derrick Hinkey grabbed one catch for three yards, while Tj
