Sometimes you face a team that’s just better.

Kern Valley’s junior varsity team had this experience when they opened their season in Taft on Friday night.

The Wildcats ran wild and stopped the Broncs 18-game unbeaten streak with a 49-0 win.

This was a new feeling for those players still on the team from last year’s squad.

Kern Valley struggled offensively as they were limited to just 65 total yards in the game. They rushed for 47 yards and threw for 18 yards.

Taft scored early and often as they put up 21 points in the first two quarters to take the 42-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half only one touchdown was scored as the Wildcats put one in the end zone in the third quarter to create the final score in the game.

Offensively for Kern Valley Carlos Martinez rushed for 44 yards on 11 carries.

Matt Carter carried six times for three yards. Carter threw for 18 yards on a 6-for-11 night with one interception.

Five different Broncs hauled in receptions in the game. Dean Hinkey caught one pass for seven yards to lead the Broncs.

Tyler Strange grabbed one pass for five yards, while Overholt caught three for three yards. Martinez had one catch for two yards, while Tristen Kuiper had one reception for one yard.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Broncs were led by Martinez with eight tackles. Ben Hamilton collected six tackles, while Scott Overholt finished with five tackles. Chris Mendoza and James Davis were credited with four tackles apiece, while Hinkey, Trenton Robertson, Strange, and Johnny Tedrow had three tackles each. Tedrow recorded the lone fumble recovery for the Broncs.

Ben Moisan and Ethan Willis each had a pair of tackles, while Austin Salem, Tristen Parker, Joey Moyer, and Josh Wesala had one tackle apiece.

Kern Valley head coach Scott Tedrow said, “I should say that they were REAL big and our players were a little shell shocked in the first half. But we challenged them to step up and play tougher in the second half and they played much better.”

With the unbeaten streak broken it’s now time for the Broncs (0-1) to start a new streak. They will play Silver Valley at home on Friday.

The current roster for the Broncs shows 30 players. There are 17 freshmen, 10 sophomores and three juniors. Juniors: Scott Overholt, Joseph Moyer, Sharon Reyes.
