The Lady Broncs JV volleyball squad began HDL play this past week as they made long trips to Bishop and Mammoth.
These first two matches of league were both two set matches. The Lady Broncs bested Bishop 25-20 and 25-21, but would drop the match to Mammoth 22-25 and 23-25. This team came into HDL action sporting a 3-2 mark. When the week was over their record stood at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the HDL.
In the match against Bishop the Lady Broncs earned 10 service aces and were credited with 14 kills. Bishop made it a close match, but in the end, it was Kern Valley grabbing the victory. Brynnleigh McCarthy led the squad in service aces with four. Taylor Kristy finished with three aces, while Samantha Wyly had a pair of serving aces. Kenadie Young capped the service scoring in aces with one. At the net Wyly and McCarthy, shared the team lead in kills with four apiece. Young followed the leaders as she recorded two kills in the match. Jade Montes, Riley Wilkins, Kristy, and Ashley Plante were credited with one kill apiece for the Lady Broncs.
On the defensive side of the net, Kern Valley saw Kristy record a whopping 12 assists. Plante and Wyly shared the team lead in digs with four. Emmalynn Bechtel and Young finished with two digs, while Wilkins and Kristy had one dig apiece. Combining the offense and defense, Kern Valley used a team effort in opening up the league portion of their schedule with a victory.
Head coach Jessica Yasin commented, “All of the girls played extremely hard throughout both of these sets. They worked well as a team starting with great passes and finishing with strong attacks. We love to beat Bishop!”
Two days later a trip to Mammoth was on the slate. In a close battle the Lady Huskies were able to come out on top. The match was decided by a total of five points in the two sets. The lucky number 13, was shred in both kills and assists in this two-set match. Young and McCarthy led the team in kills with four each. Wyly delivered three kills, while Montes and Anna Allen had one kill apiece. Kristy recorded 13 assists in the match and shared the team lead in service aces with two. Montes was the other Kern Valley player to be credited with two aces.
Continuing the 13 trend Plante led the team in digs with 13 of them. Young followed with 11 digs, while Kristy had five. Wilkins finished with four, while Keira Hayes recorded three digs. McCarthy and Bechtel each had a pair of digs, while Wyly had one dig.
Yasin speaking on the match with Mammoth said, “We ended a long week in Mammoth with a couple of hard-fought games. I am very proud of the girls for fighting through some adversity throughout both sets. In the end we could not finish and lacked a bit of confidence. We will be working hard to make sure we beat them at home!”
Kern Valley continued HDL action with a match at home with Boron on Tuesday. They will entertain Desert High School at home on Thursday.
