The Kern Valley Broncs wrestling team was at home when they competed in the High Desert League wrestling finals on Feb. 6.
As a team, they took down seven golds. This equates to seven league champion wrestlers from Kern Valley.
Chane Randall, Chris Mendoza, and Gaige Smoot were league champions by never having to take the mat. They would receive forfeits and be declared league champions.
Mackenzie Christensen, Ricardo Tapia, and Diego Tapia all went 1-0 on the day. They would all win by pin in the finals to grab their gold.
Johnny Weghorst went 2-0 on the day to claim the seventh gold for the Broncs. He claimed his league championship by pinning both opponents with a pair of pins. Mateo Garza went 1-1 on the day, pinning his first opponent. He came up short 4-6 in the finals to place second. Max Crockett lost his first match but came back to pin his next opponent for a third-place finish. Dean Hinkey also took third. To round it out Deacon Crockett took fifth.
Head coach Wes Woody said, “It was a great day and a great finish for the Broncs after collecting their 20th HDL title and picking up seven league champs.”
Woody finished by saying, “Thanks to all who came out to support the Broncs this season. We really appreciate it.”
Up next is the CIF Tournament for both the boys and girls teams. The boys will go to Golden West and the girls to Mission Oaks.
