JV Lady Broncs basketball team handle Boron 37-15

The Kern Valley JV girls entertained the Lady Bobcats of Boron on Dec. 20. They would collect the victory in their HDL matchup.
The game started off in the right direction as the Lady Broncs defense shut down Boron. Kern Valley allowed zero points in the first quarter to take control. They would never look back the rest of the way. The offense did its part as they turned the pressure defense into points. They poured in 12 points in the first quarter to open a 12-0 cushion.
The fast start would prove helpful as both teams turned up the defense in the second quarter. The offenses were handled and the scoreboard would reflect that. Only seven combined points were scored to end the first half. Kern Valley would add four points to their total, while the Lady Bobcats managed to finally get on the board. They would score three points. The teams went to the break with the Lady Broncs leading 16-3.
The second half saw Boron climb back into the game. They continued their defensive presence by limiting Kern Valley to just four more points. The Lady Bobcats would score 10 points to head to the final quarter with the score sitting at 20-13. Kern Valley took exception and rebounded to take back control in the fourth quarter. The defense was once again on point or actually limited points, Kern Valley stymied their opponent. Boron managed to score just four more points in the game. The Lady Broncs got back on track offensively as they dropped in 17 fourth-quarter points to create the 37-15 score to collect the victory.
Leading the charge was Taylor Kristy with a double-double. She scored 13 points, including hitting once from downtown to lead her team. She completed the double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. With eight of those on the offensive boards. Millie Bustamonte finished with eight points. She was able to hit once from behind the three-point line. Sam Ruiz scored six points, while Brooke Gibson added four points. Finishing up the scoring for the Lady Broncs were three players with two points apiece. Amber McAhren, Kaylle Ellis, and Hazel Kiosef each had two points.
Ruiz led the Kern Valley team in assists with four. Kristy followed with two assists, while five other recorded one assist in the contest. Piper Connolly, Zoe Perfect, Bustamonte, Peyton Mental, and Bobbie Pruitt each had one assist in the game. McAhren was the team leader in rebounding as she grabbed 14 rebounds. Kiosef gathered in five boards, while Perfect secured four rebounds. Ellis, Gibson, and Bustamonte each had three rebounds, while Pruitt and Ruiz each had a pair of boards. Kiosef was able to reject three shot attempts by the Lady Bobcats. Ellis recorded a pair of blocks for the Lady Broncs.
Continuing on the defensive side of the game, the Kern Valley squad totaled 31 steals in the contest. All but one player on the squad recorded at least one steal. Kristy and Ellis shared the team lead in thefts with five apiece. Kiosef and Mental each had four steals, while McAhren and Ruiz finished with three steals apiece. Gibson and Alissa Webster each recorded a pair of steals, while Perfect, Bustamonte, and Pruitt had one steal apiece.
Kern Valley head coach Kenny Bushling commenting on the game said, “We employed a full court 2-2-1 press. We also used a ‘platoon’ system of generally subbing five at a time. We generate offensive points from the defensive pressure that we bring.
On the season, the Lady Broncs are currently 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the HDL. Kern Valley was back in action on Tuesday as they faced off with Desert on the Lady Broncs home court. They will travel to Frazier Mountain on Friday to continue HDL play.
