On Monday, May 28, 2018, John Anthony Arcurio, beloved father, son and brother, passed away suddenly at the age of 61 years in Coloma, Calif.
Born on February 16, 1957, in New York, growing up in New York and Pennsylvania with his family. John attended Abington High School in Pennsylvania, where he wrestled and earned several CIF titles. After graduating high school in 1975, John moved to California, where he later attended Ventura Community College in the 1980s and began his career as a certified landscape technician. John owned and managed Sierra Landscaping Inc., servicing the Kern River Valley in central California for twenty years. It was on the Kern River where he learned and developed a passion for guiding whitewater rafting tours.
John moved away from Kern River Valley in 2001 to pursue various landscaping and rafting management opportunities across California, North Carolina, Colorado, eventually returning to and setting roots near Coloma, Calif., where he died preparing to do the thing he loved: rafting. John is remembered by many as being young at heart, enjoying each day in God’s creation.
He was an incredible father and grandpa, always expressing much love and joy for his children and grandchildren, making each visit with them special and memorable! He was also a loyal and dedicated friend who enjoyed meeting new faces wherever he went. He made a point to stay connected with many friends through every season and new adventure, making many lifelong friends along the way! John was sure to make an impression on each person he came across with his sense of humor, energy, great work ethic, passion, and natural coaching spirit. His presence will be missed by many!
John was predeceased by his father Alfred and is survived by his daughter Jasmine (Chris), son Kyle (Krystle), and 5 grandchildren: Zane, Reid, Ava, Ameilia, and Aubrey, by his mother Betty, sister Linda, brother Alan Sr., and grandpup Samson. John will also be forever remembered by his numerous nieces, nephew, extended family, dear friends and fellow river rats across the country.
A riverside celebration of John’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at Mountain and River Adventures Campground, 15775 Sierra Way, Kernville, Calif., 93238. Anyone who knew and loved John is welcomed to attend.
