At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, the Kern County Fire Department received a call about a fire in the 14000 block of Hwy. 178 in South Lake. When crews arrived on scene, they found flames and smoke coming from the rear of the Sierra Gateway Market. Fire crews were able to enter the building and effectively contain the blaze, stopping it from spreading further into the market and surrounding areas. Once the fire was knocked down, crews performed a secondary search and confirmed an all clear. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Fortunately, the fire was confined to the freezer in the meat department, located in the back of the Sierra Gateway Market. Head Scan Coordinator, Bonnie Broughton-Zamora, confirmed on Monday, Oct. 16, that the market is open and also wanted to inform those who had locker beef or farm animals in the freezers that the meat department will be in contact as soon as they have more information.
