Hunter Ellis and A.J. Duncan competed at CIF Central Section Division 2 Track and Field Championships at Exeter High School on May 10.

There are only two sections in track and field in the central section of CIF, Division 1 has three different meets (North, Central, and South), and Division 2 has one meet.

The top three are automatic qualifiers to the Central Section Championships and then the next six best get at-large berths to the Central Section Championships.

Conditions: Exeter High School has a nine-lane all-weather track, they have excellent jumping facilities, and there throwing rings are across the street at a separate facility – the throwers throw onto grass. It was 82 degrees at the start of the meet (4 p.m.) and the temp. reached 85 degrees by 5 p.m.

The throwers and jumpers events were completed by 6:30 p.m.

The top six medal with the top nine getting three additional throws/jumps after the original three throws/jumps. There were 43 schools represented at this meet.

Ellis and Duncan both reached the standards to qualify for this meet – this is the second year that both of them have qualified for this meet.

Ellis – Long jump – Hunter was seeded seventh coming into this meet. His first jump was 20’7” in the prelims, his second jump was 20’10”(PR) and this jump put him in second place. He scratched on his third attempt. So, Hunter was in the top nine now seeded second, Ellis had excellent jumps on his first and third attempts (21’ plus), but barely scratched on those attempts, on his second attempt he jumped 20’6.25. Ellis finished in second. The first place jump was 21’1”.

Ellis is the first Kern Valley Track and Field athlete to move on to the CIF Central Section Championships at Buchanan High School on May 20. This is the Broncs fourth year in the Central Section.

Ellis said, “I went in this meet really confident and knowing that I would have some competition because I was seeded seventh, but my coach just told me to try my best and you will succeed. So that was my mind set and I went and had a great time at Exeter.”

Duncan: Discus: came into the competition seeded 11th. After the first three throws Duncan was able to move up to seventh place with a throw of 129’10” on his second throw. After getting three more throws Duncan stayed in seventh.

All of Duncan’s throws were between 120’ and 129’10”. Only one sophomore and one junior finished ahead of him. Duncan is a junior.
