At the Kern River Valley Cemetery District board of trustees meeting, Tuesday September 10, district board and staff updated on the Old Cemetery, the well, and how much progress the district was making meeting the Grand Jury Report suggestions.

District manager Orion Sanders said with regard to the FEMA grant, that a completed report had been sent to the FEMA center that would review it and it was in review. Sanders said that he did not know the exact time frame wherein the review would be completed. “As any other government agency they’re pretty much on their own time. So that is moving along as well,” Sanders said.

The well acid wash was completed. The district was still evaluating how well the circuits were watering the landscaping at the cemetery grounds. Sanders thought that the district had to finish evaluating the well before deciding whether the district board of trustees would use CalWater or explore the options of another well, or a filter system at Big Blue Mine.

The district was performing five internments in the weeks that followed the board meeting.

Sanders ordered gray colored tee shirts and hats with the district’s logos on them for the board and district employees.

On the topic of audits Blythe, who attended the meeting remotely, told the board that the CPA expected a draft of 2016 and 2017 audits to be done that week to provide for the board.

Blythe said that administrative staff members completed past board meeting minutes to meet the Grand Jury Report requirements.

Chair of the board Harry Schutstz said all trustees were current on their ethics training, which also was a Grand Jury Report suggestion. Trustee Mike Ryan was finishing up his online harassment training. That would bring all members of the board current according to Schutstz.

Chairman Schutstz also thought that bringing in a full time groundskeeper to keep the grounds was a fulfillment of the Grand Jury’s suggestion about staff needs because Reno Shadden, the new grounds keeper was present 32 hours per week.
