On Wednesday Kern Valley competed against Desert High School for the last home race of the year. Before the race the team along with Bella Williams parents and Mrs. Woodward and her Spanish Class celebrated Bella’s last home race. Bella has been on the Cross Country Team the last four years and is doing a great job as our Captain this year.
The boys team defeated Desert High School and Will Bunting ran a great race. Bunting finished in second place with the time of 20:59 setting a personal record. Gunner Davis finished in third place at 22:04 and did great considering he has been sick. Trey Bushling ran hard and finished in fourth place at 22:45 and Mack Wargo finished in fifth place at 23:34.
Richard Lambert joined the team last week and ran his first high school cross country race and finished with the time of 41:42.
Kern Valley head coach Don Hazard said, “It’s great to have Richard on the team.”
In the girls race Addy Goulding continues to improve and finished in second place at 23:03 setting a personal record. Williams came in third at 24:16 and Olivia Wagner came in fifth at 28:46.
The Lady Broncs did not score as a team in the race, because you need at least five athletes to get a team score.
On Thursday, Kern Valley traveled to the Reedley College Invitational to compete against 23 other high schools.
The Reedley College Invitational has six races; a frosh/soph boys and girls race, a jayvee boys and girls race and a varsity boys and girls race.
We were able to put the Kern Valley Athletes in different races.
In the frosh/soph girls race Wagner finished with an incredible sprint the last 200 yards to pass two girls at the tape and finished 34th in the race at 30:00.
In the frosh/soph boys race Wargo ran his best race of his career and came in 40th place at 21:33 setting a personal record. Davis finished in 47th place at 22:43 and Bunting came in 50th place at 22:50.
In the jayvee girls race Addy Goulding got off the starting line fast and had the lead early on in the race. She ended the race with a strong sprint to catch and pass a girl that had a 30-yard lead at 200 yards. Addie took fourth place at 24:30 and received a medal.
Bushling ran in the boys jayvee race and finished in 55th place at 26:19.
Williams ran in the girls varsity race and finished in 37th place at 25:24.
Hazard said, “Everyone felt good about their race and liked the Invitational. That’s the first time Kern Valley has competed at the Reedley College Invitational but the team enjoyed it and wants to go back next year. Coming back from the race the canyon was closed so we had to come back on the Lion’s Trail which the team enjoyed. Everyone is improving. Gunner (Davis) and Bella (Williams) have been under the weather, but should be better in time for league finals and CIF.
Hazard finished by saying, “It’s a real privilege to coach these student/athletes.”
Today the team travels to Frazier Mountain for a dual meet.
