The junior varsity Broncs played another defensive game and came out on top.

Kern Valley entertained Strathmore on Friday as the non-league season came to an end.

The Broncs played a complete game on both sides of the ball and came away with the 28-7 victory.

Kern Valley was able to get the run game going and made it last the whole game. The Broncs racked up 278 yards of rushing on 38 carries. They scored all four touchdowns on the ground.

The Kern Valley defense did its job as they allowed just 122 total yards of offense to the Spartans. Strathmore picked up 54 yards of rushing and 68 yards through the air.

The first half was a defensive battle by both teams. The Broncs were the only team to score in the first half.

Kern Valley took their first possession down the field and punched it over from six yards to start the scoring. Michael Moreno recorded the first TD for Kern Valley with a little over three minutes in the first quarter. Aldo Mascote added the PAT to make the scoreboard read 7-0 for the home team Broncs.

The rest of the way neither team could find the end zone. The halftime score was 7-0 for Kern Valley.

Coming out of the break, the Broncs made the Spartans turn the ball over on the first play from scrimmage. Gaige Smoot pounced on the loose ball giving the Broncs good field position. It took just five plays for Chris Mendoza to cross the goal line to add to the lead. Mendoza romped in from the nine-yard line and Mascote added the extra-point to make it 14-0.
The Broncs got tricky as they tried an onside kick. Dominik Mental recovered and Kern Valley was set up at the Spartans 40-yard line.

Moreno wasted little time in scoring for the second time as he scampered the 40 yards for the touchdown. Once again Macote’s PAT was true and the lead was now 21-0.

Strathmore finally got on the scoreboard as they scored a touchdown and added the PAT to put it at 21-7 with 4:08 left in the third quarter.

The Broncs scored their last touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Moreno skipped in from 10 yards out for his third touchdown of the game. Mascote booted the PAT.

Josh Papp was three-for-six passing for 27 yards. He hit three different Broncs receivers. Mendoza caught one pass for 18 yards, while Derrick Hinkey hauled in one pass for nine yards. Moreno caught one pass that went for zero yards.

Moreno carried 25 times for 221 yards to lead the Broncs ground game.
Bryan Hernandez picked up 30 yards with four touches, while Mendoza had 27 yards with nine rushes.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Kern Valley squad was led by Hernandez with nine tackles. Nathan Montgomery collected eight tackles, including three sacks, while Menodoza was credited with eight tackles. Smoot had five tackles and the fumble recovery, while Derrick Hinkey, Moreno, and Mental each had five tackles. Christian Parks recorded three tackles, while Ibarra had a pair of tackles, including a sack. Dean Hinkey had two tackles, while Logan Hill had one tackle in the game.

Head coach Scott Tedrow said, “We played a real solid game and got our first home win of the year. This was a great game to finish preseason with and get ready to open our league schedule against Cal City next week. Our offense really dominated the game on the ground. We ran the ball for 278 yards and four touchdowns.”

The Broncs will open High Desert League play on Friday when they make the trip to Cal City.
