Founded in 1959, the Kern Valley Sun has served the Kern River Valley for over six decades by reporting stories that matter most to residents. The weekly newspaper covers government, public safety, schools, businesses, health care, outdoor recreation, and community events across Lake Isabella, Kernville, Mountain Mesa, Wofford Heights, Riverkern, Bodfish, Weldon, and surrounding communities.

Through its print edition, website, social media, photography, and public-service reporting, the Sun keeps residents informed and records Kern Valley’s life and history. Its goal is to provide accurate, fair, and accessible local news while giving residents, businesses, and community organizations a place to share their stories.

The Kern Valley Sun is locally owned by John Watkins, Lynda Kissack-Watkins, and Spencer Shepard. Through local ownership and employees the Kern Valley Sun keeps the newspaper focused on the needs of the Kern River Valley and ensures coverage decisions are made by people who live, work, and participate in the community.
