The Broncs varsity basketball team was in league action on Dec. 20 when they hosted Boron in an HDL contest. They would collect the 52-37 victory.
The difference of the game was the middle quarters where the Kern Valley defense turned up the heat and limited the Bobcats to a total of nine points to end the half and coming out of the break. The game see-sawed after the tip off. The two teams battled swapping baskets. When the horn sounded to end the opening quarter of action, the Broncs were sitting on top 15-12. In the second the defense turned it up a notch and held their opponent to six points. The offense continued to find the mark and dropped in 12 points to take a 27-18 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was an extension of the second as the Broncs shut down Boron’s offense. They managed to allow just three points to open a big margin and then cruise to the win. Kern Valley added 13 points to their total in the third to make the score 40-21 as they headed to the final quarter. The Bobcats tried to come back as they outscored Kern Valley 16-12, but in the end the middle quarters were the downfall for Boron.
Leading the way for the Broncs was Aiden Madden who poured in 18 points. He would hit twice from behind the three-point arc. Carson Parks added 11 points, including a three-pointer, while Joey Galvan followed with nine points. Jeffrey Clark scored six points, while Bryce Smoot got in on the scoring with four points. Closing out the scoring for Kern Valley was Maddox Beaury and Zane Carver with two points apiece. Playing as an unselfish team, 8-of-the-10 players from the Broncs squad handed out at least one assist. The team leader was Parks with three. Madden, Shiloh Galvan, Smoot, and Carver each had a pair of assists in the game. Clark, J. Galvan, and Daniel Hinkey recorded one assist apiece.
Turning to the defensive side of the ball, Carver was the ‘chairman-of-the-boards’. He had a team-high 11 rebounds. Clark and J. Galvan each pulled down five boards, while Smoot grabbed four rebounds. Madden was credited with three boards, while Jacob Redenius and Beaury pulled down two rebounds apiece. Four Broncs swatted away would be shots from the Bobcats. Redenius, Beaury, Clark, and Carver had one block each in the contest. Sharing the lead in steals was Smoot and Parks with a total of five each. Madden, J. Galvan, and Carver got in on the thievery with two steals apiece. Redenius, Clark, and Hinkey each had one steal for Kern Valley.
The Broncs currently sit at 4-8 overall with league mark of 2-1. They faced off with Desert on their home court on Tuesday and will go on the road to square off with Frazier Mountain on Friday.
