Final thoughts on a banner year for JV football

By Head Coach Bill Gallis

The Kern Valley JV football team closed out the 2024 season with an impressive 5-4 overall record and a 3-1 finish in the High Desert League, placing second. This season showcased not only the team’s competitive edge but also marked substantial growth, especially considering the youthful roster of 21 freshmen. Despite the team’s youth, they showed resilience and dedication, with significant improvements across all positions, thanks in part to a challenging preseason schedule that strengthened their skills and built character.
The coaching staff played an integral role in guiding this young team. Defensive Coordinator Aaron Lafarga was instrumental in preparing the defensive players each week, he was supported by Offensive and Defensive Line Coach Kenny King. Bill Chase offered valuable leadership and guidance, while Offensive Coordinator Davin Lee, in his second year, kept the offense dynamic and exciting, helping the team achieve its potential.
The season began with a thrilling comeback victory over McFarland, winning 28-8. This game set a confident tone for the Broncs, showing the players they could succeed at the JV level. Another memorable win came in their last non-league game, a 15-0 road shutout against Mira Monte, proving the Broncs could compete with larger teams.
The team’s High Desert League journey began on a high note with a 28-20 homecoming win over Rosamond in front of an enthusiastic crowd. This win was a major morale booster, setting the tone for league play. One of the season’s defining moments was a 42-0 road victory over California City, where the Broncs displayed the strength of their cohesive unit and skill.
Close losses provided valuable lessons for the Broncs. Early non-league games against teams like Immanuel and Mission Prep tested their resolve, preparing them for league competition, particularly the intense matchup against Bishop. Despite falling behind 27-6, the team fought back, reducing the gap to 33-28 before ultimately losing 52-28. This heartbreaker served as a testament to their resilience and determination, traits that will serve them well in the future.
