Kern Valley JV volleyball topples Mammoth

The JV Lady Broncs volleyball team playing on their home court take down a powerhouse.
The Lady Huskies of Mammoth came town undefeated in league play to face off with a determined Kern Valley squad. It was a marathon effort for the home squad as it took three sets to create a winner. The first set went to Mammoth. The score saw the Lady Huskies grab the match lead 1-0. The score of the set was 25-23. The Lady Broncs battled back to even the match at 1-1. Kern Valley won the second set 25-20 to send it to the volleyball decider.
In the third and final set, the two teams see-sawed for the victory. When the final whistle sounded, it was the Lady Broncs that came away with the 15-13 win. This set victory allowed the Kern Valley squad to knock the Lady Huskies off the undefeated pedestal. The team victory for the Lady Broncs was a confidence builder that will propel them to bigger wins the rest of the way.
Brynnleigh McCarthy led Kern Valley in service aces with five. Jade Montes and Anna Allen each had a pair of aces, while Kenadie Young wrapped up the service aces with one. Allen and McCarthy shared the team lead in kills with five apiece. Taylor Kristy delivered three kills, while Montes and Ahley Plante each had one kill.
On the defensive side of the net, the Lady Broncs saw Montes grab some air to record a pair of blocks. Kristy was credited with nine assists to lead her team. Samantha Wyly had one assist in this match. Three Kern Valley players recorded double-digit digs. Plante topped the list with a whopping 21 digs. Wyly followed with 12, while Young finished with 10 digs. Emmalyn Bechtel had six, while Kiki Smith finished with five. Amber McAhren and Kristy each hustled for three digs, while the M and M team of Montes and McCarthy had two digs. Capping the defense was Allen with one dig.
Kern Valley head coach Jessica Yasin said, “This was a huge win against a previously undefeated team. Everybody came together to work as a team. Anna Allen had a huge night, stepping up with five kills and more great touches.”
Two days later the Lady Broncs made the trip to Boron. It was their hope they would not suffer a letdown. There was no chance in that as the kept up the winning pace by beating the Bobcats in two sets. The set went the distance as the final score was 26-24. They finished off the match win as they won the second set 25-15.
Montes had the hot serving hand as she delivered six service aces in the match to lead the Lady Broncs. Young followed with a pair of aces. Serving up one ace each for Kern Valley were McCarthy, Riley Wilkins, and McAhren. At the net, McCarthy was the team leader in kills with seven. Wyly delivered a pair of kills, while Montes and McAhren each had one kill for the Lady Broncs.
Defensively, Kern Valley’s Kristy and Young shared the team lead in assists with four apiece. The digs leader for the team was Wyly with seven. Plante finished with three digs, while Young had two digs. Smith, Wilkins, Keira Hayes, and Bechtel each had one dig in this match.
Next up for the Lady Broncs was a trip to take on Desert on Tuesday. Two days later the Kern Valley team will be on their home court when they entertain Frazier Mountain.
