Local stock car driver, Wayne Coffman drove his No. 5 car to victory lane in Arizona.
Coffman, of Weldon ran both of his cars at Mohave Valley Raceway on August 31. He competed in both the Modified Division and the pro/stock division. The modified race was first and then it was a quick turn-around to jump in the pro/stock. In the heat race, Coffman started in the second spot and ran to first place to qualify for the main. He talked to his pit crew and they made the adjustment that the driver wanted. The set up and his fifth-place start put him in a position to battle for the race.
After the first four laps of the main event, Coffman had moved into battling for the lead. By the time he crossed the start/finish line on lap five he had wrestled away the top spot. Coffman cruised to the raceway for the next 15 laps and took his first checkered flag at Mohave Valley Raceway.
Coffman said, “I couldn’t do it without the help from James (Booker) and Chris (Booker) and my sponsors, Reliance Fence CRG, Mt Mesa Lanes, OGR and the support of my wife Kris Coffman, Nick Coffman, Michelle, Heather, and Shadow Booker.”
In the modified division, Coffman would start his heat as the sixth-place car. He drove it up two spots to fourth where he finished. He would qualify for the modified main and go off in sixth place. Coffman had moved his car up to a battle with the second-place car, but he ran into car trouble as the front left brake line busted. Coffman limped his car around the track and still managed a respectful fourth-place finish. It was then that Coffman had to scramble as he jumped out of one car into the other to continue his night of racing.
Coffman currently sits ninth place in the pro/stock division. There are 26 drivers that have earned points in the division. He has amassed 98 points and trails the leader by a minus 182 points. As the racing season continues to draw near its end, Coffman will keep his thoughts on improving his position and hopefully move closer to the top.
