SACRAMENTO, Calif – It has been 98 days since March 18 when Governor Newsom was scheduled to deliver the annual State of the State speech in person. Tomorrow, he will release a pre-recorded State of the State speech. Traditionally, previous governors delivered their State of the State remarks in person and earlier in the legislative session to members of the California State Legislature.
California Legislative Republicans offer you a joint pre-response video, which will outline the state of disrepair California citizens are feeling, opposite of what Governor Newsom wants you to believe in his pre-recorded speech. In addition to the video, Legislative Republican leaders will provide in-person reaction tomorrow following the governor’s video speech.
“While this pre-recorded speech fulfills the governor’s legal mandate, it does not in any real way fulfill his responsibility to Californians who deserve a safe, affordable and opportunity-filled future,” said Senator Kelly Seyarto (R-Murrieta). “California remains the country’s homeless capital, businesses are closing their doors, and crime continues to rise. The state of this state is simply not good under Newsom’s leadership and any claims to the contrary he makes in his speech will be patently false. The good news is, it can be fixed and Legislative Republicans continue to work to that end.”
Sanchez, Seyarto and other California Legislative Republicans have been working to advance proposals to crack down on human trafficking, increase penalties for fentanyl dealers, curb retail theft, increase access to treatment and housing for the homeless and resolve other pressing issues facing the state. To date, the governor and Legislative Democrats have been mostly resistant to those proposals but many have gained traction regardless.
