In a match in which the Kern Valley girls soccer team controlled the action, they had difficulty putting on the necessary pressure to put scores on the board. The Lady Broncs fell to 8-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in High Desert League play, scoring late, to gain a 1-1 tie against Desert at the Scorpions’ pitch, January 23. The Scorpions, who tie often, played their fifth HDL tie this season, and now owns a 3-8-5 mark overall and are 2-4-5 in the HDL.
The team seemed ready, and controlled the game, with no results for most of it, said KV girls soccer coach Paul Armes. “We were enthusiastic going into the kickoff. We had energy, but no results. We had possession probably 80 of the 90 minutes. We just couldn’t find the net. The girls gave the effort, but we couldn’t finish. Nothing was working for us.
Armes said the Scorpions’ goal was on a deflection. “They scored off a corner kick that bounced off a girl’s hip into the goal,” Coach Armes said. “The half ended 1-0, and we knew we’d have to fight to get back in the game. In the second half, still down by a goal, Kayley Sietsma scored off Aspen Hacker’s corner kick. The kick was dynamic and stopped the loss. My Player of the Week would by Kayley, for scoring the equalizer.”
Coach Armes also praised his goaltender, Isabelle Mosqueada. “Izzy had three saves and kept us in it.
The Broncs were scheduled to play Rosamond (6-14, 5-6) Monday. Details and results were unavailable at press time. KV next takes to the pitch on February 1, at Cal City (10-7-1, 8-4-1 HDL).
